RA.EX041 DJ Harvey – 2011.06.10
The famed disco editor talks us through the thrills and spills of his lengthy career.
As one of dance music’s most engaging personalities, DJ Harvey was a no-brainer for the RA Exchange series. An early Ministry of Sound resident, Harvey honed his skills in the UK before finding himself exiled in the United States for many years. With his visa issues finally sorted out in 2010, Harvey has toured the world and more than lived up to his mythic status. He has also finally put his name to some original productions as Locussolus after earning a reputation as a master of the cheeky edit on the Black Cock label. This month, International Feel will release his debut album. We caught up with Harvey in Los Angeles in May for a lively conversation. We don’t want to spoil anything, but we encourage you to sit all the way to the end for this one—even if nature calls.
Locussolus – Little Boots – International Feel
The Beach Boys – Let’s Go Away for Awhile – Capitol
Hawkwind – Quark, Strangeness & Charm – Charisma
Black Cock – Blue Love – Black Cock
Black Cock – Frog Scene – Black Cock

Locussolus – Gunship – International Feel
Locussolus – Bloodbath – International Feel
Locussolus – I Want It (Time & Space Machine Remix) – International Feel
Black Cock – Juicy Sushi – Black Cock
The Doors – Roadhouse Blues – Elektra
Admiral Freebee – My Hippie Ain’t Hip (DJ Harvey Remix) – Play Out!
Locussolus – Next to You – International Feel
House of House – Rushing to Paradise (DJ Harvey Remix) – House of House

RA.188 Terre Thaemlitz aka DJ Sprinkles
The producer behind RA's #1 album of 2009 starts off the year with an acoustic-electro ambient mix.
Terre Thaemlitz, AKA DJ Sprinkles, AKA G.R.R.L., AKA Kami-Sakunobe House Explosion K-S.H.E, AKA Social Material, AKA Teriko, AKA Terre's Neu Wuss Fusion, is something of a polymath. After moving to New York in the mid-'80s and getting bit by the house music bug, Thaemlitz adopted the aforementioned Sprinkles guise and quickly found a place via idiosyncratic DJing that combined the undeniable glamour of house music and "challenging, elaborated structures" as Thaemlitz bio puts it.
It was a combination that didn't exactly make for populist sets, to say the least. But in listening to mixes since, you can tell that Sprinkles knows how to party. Nonetheless, this alienation from the house scene found its way back into Thaemlitz's music at various points—most powerfully as part of Midtown 120 Blues—but the RA podcast prepared for us is largely geared towards the voluminous work done under Thaemlitz name. Encompassing tracks that Thaemlitz has dubbed "acoustic-electro ambient," like The Orb's first podcast of 2008, it invites you to start the year slowly, in a contemplative manner (Source Residentadvisor.net)

The Lysergic Acid Diethylamide experience
First of all, a warm welcome to Oliva and Anita, thanks for joining the show. The Lysergic Acid Diethylamide mix it's supposed to be an out of body, time distortion, cognitive shift experience. I did it with my friend Lowestein in mind, but it is a technological music trip aimed to anyone willing to listen to it. I suggest you increase the lower and the high frequencies on your equalizer for a better result. The tracks selection ranges from IDM of the early 90's to present day electronic dance music, with acid elements, lot's of looping and a great deal of harmonic mixing. It is by no means perfect, and kind of dark at times, but it is enjoyable. The mix is 142 minutes long (hence it's a heavy file, 200MB), you can download it, or just flash-play it on the host site. PLEASE leave comments if you download it. Enjoy

Days of pasta and salads revisited
I revised this old mix I did about a year ago, made a few changes, and checked the master volume since a few followers pointed out the poor sound quality. So I am uploading it again, hopefully this time it should play just fine.Enjoy and please leave a comment.

The Dubstep Warrior

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that has its roots in London's early 2000s UK garage scene. Musically, dubstep is distinguished by its 2step rhythm, or use of snare sounds similar to 2step garage and grime, and an emphasis on bass, often producing "dark" sounds, but just as frequently producing sounds reminiscent of dub reggae or funky US garage. Dubstep tracks are generally produced at a tempo of around 140 beats per minute and in recent years have developed signature half time rhythms, often heavily shuffled or syncopated, and usually, though not exclusively, including only one snare drum hit per bar, often on the third beat. Often, the sense of rhythm in dubstep is propelled more by the bassline than by the percussive content.
The earliest dubstep releases, which date back to 1999, were darker, more experimental, instrumental dub remixes of 2-step garage tracks attempting to incorporate the funky elements of breakbeat, or the dark elements of drum and bass into 2-step, which featured as B-sides of single releases. In 2001, this and other strains of dark garage music began to be showcased and promoted at London's club night Forward>>, which went on to be considerably influential to the development of dubstep. The term "dubstep" in reference to a genre of music began to be used by around 2002, by which time stylistic trends used in creating these remixes started to become more noticeable and distinct from 2-step and grime.
Dubstep started to spread beyond small local scenes in late 2005 and early 2006; and it has now become extremely popular also outside the UK.
The following Mix was produced by 20 years old Italian DJ/Producer Samuele Bozzolo (Aka DJ Bozzy) in July 2009. The mood is dark and grime and as you would expect it should be played on a really massive sound system. For DJ Bozzy bookings in Japan, please contact me at mucho.sugoi(AT)gmail(DOT)com
